Move iTunes Music to an External and Eliminate Duplicates!

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

After years and years of adding to my iTunes mess, I finally decided to clean up my library.

After looking through a bunch of limiting time sucker “dupe finder” apps I had a feeling that an apple script would do the job more efficiently .

Found one!

1. Set Preferences > Advanced > iTunes Library Location, to  the new destination [usually on your external with lots of free space].

2. Go to File > Library > Consolidate Library and make sure you use the same location as in step 1.

Note: “Consolidate Library” does note delete anything, none of the automated steps here do. It will actually just duplicate your library in the new location.  It will also include any files that where not copied to the library, and reside in other locations.

3. Download and install the script at this link.

4. Run the “Corral iTunes Dupes”  script.

I used “Match” > Name + Size [cmd + click to select more than one parameter at a time]

Note: You will get an option to choose if you want all the files [original + duplicate] or just the duplicates added to the “Dupes” playlist.

Choose > “Duplicates”

Another Note: The script basically just gathers all the dupes and lumps them into a playlist called “Dupes” you can then OPTION – DELETE that playlist and nuke your duplicates!

5. The files will be in your Trash, so test everything before clicking “Empty Trash”.

Another suggestion I can make here if you are looking to totally clean up your iTunes library:

The ID3 tag version will make a difference in audio programs such as SCRATCH LIVE, I had a pretty big issue once with BPM’s [Beats per Minute] showing up in iTunes but not in SSL…

I got a great bit of info from one of the admins from the SSL forums:

This causes confusion in SSL.
To fix this issue you will need to strip the tags from your files and convert to version 2.3.
Unfortunately stripping the tags will delete any cue points and loops .
Try it out on one track.

Stripping tags and converting to version 2.3.

1. Close all programs.
2. Open iTunes.
3. Click on your ‘music’ to show all the songs in your library.
4. Select all (apple+a Mac) (ctrl+a PC).
5. Click on the ‘advanced’ column.
6. Select ‘convert id3 tags’.
7. Check the ‘id3 tag version’ and select ‘none’.
8. Press ‘ok’.
9. Click on the ‘advanced’ column.
10. Select ‘convert id3 tags’.
11. Check the ‘id3 tag version’ and select ’2.3′.
12. Press ‘ok’.

After all of this rescan your id3 tags in SSL.

Billings is a great freelance billing tool

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

If you work on computers you need to track your screen time.. billing will be a real headache if not!!

I have tried quite a few of these time trackers [such as slimtimer], but this one in particular I really like.

The clients are imported from mac “Address Book” and include all the necessary contact information to add automatically to invoices and estimates… Very cool.

Its not free, but can be used for a very reasonable price.

Slimtimer is suited to a team environment.  Track your sub-contractors screen time.

I used this software everyday for a couple years.  It’s a great low profile tool that you can have in the background.  It’s free as well!

One advantage Slimtimer has over native time tracking apps, it’s light weight.

You can accuratly track a number of developers simultaniously with this website.  Allowing you to mine development time and productivity very effectively.

I found Billings more suited to the type of work I am doing now.  I noticed a jump in productivity with my time tracking and invoicing workflow.  Also these guys are near my hometown!

Comic Fonts Show Expression In Your Design

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Blambot has always been a great source for creative fonts for me. Usually when I have a creative project that has no style guide or pre-established fonts, I will turn to these guys for ideas.

Blambot comes out with new fonts every week and offers both mac and windows versions of every font.

Best of all, they offer a website that is a joy to use and won’t dampen your creative process!

50k views on Dj Frost YouTube, Tubemogul helps

Monday, August 4th, 2008

The Dj Frost youTube channel hit just over 50 000 views the other day, this is pretty cool as I have done very little promotion for the channel.

An interesting service that I have been using recently is Tubemogul.

This service provides simultaneous upload to several video sharing sites.  Which sites you ask?  Well a pretty long list of sites are supported and you can decide for yourself if they are worth signing up for yourself.  From what I have seen Youtube pretty much dwarfs all other video sites in a “Google Like Domination”[:

I have found that the host of other sites that Tubemogul syndicates to are very weak in terms of human interest [based on view and comment response feedback].

This brings an almost Google Analytics look to youTube, this is important because you can see results when you produce something and update your channel.

Peace,

Kickass Video. Check this out and if it doesn’t make you move then…

I first heard a mix of this track on the one and only mixtapeshow.net podcast. You need to get on that subscription if your not already!! [assuming you like the sound of "soultronica" that is...]. The mix that is on Dex’s show is much much stronger and features a crazy build where a synth almost takes over the whole beat!!

Anyway, enjoy this video and if it doesn’t get you moving I dont know what will! I make a really weird comparison between this and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” below…

And now the roger rabbit one…

Now that I see the two side by side I must admit they are nowhere near similar on a surface level… not sure why I thought of it but thats what happens sometimes in the land of frost…

The Photography spans the world, from African Desserts to Downtown Streets. I have recently been lucky enough to be working with photographer Ben Johnstone on some custom wide body photographic prints.

Some of the images that we have to work with where so vivid and saturated I had to write about them here! The particular pieces I have featured are being printed on a stretch of canvas as I write. Everyone is excited to have the capability of printing on canvas and providing large format prints.

If you are interested in a special photographic image printed large format or for whatever purpose, don’t hesitate to contact Ben Johnstone directly.

Sensi Media – Sheldon Lawrie – Branding and Identity Creation

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

I had the pleasure of meeting Sheldon while working with a custom printing company in Vancouver BC. We spent countless hours working on custom quotes and pre-press services for a wide range of graphic designers and small to medium businesses in the Vancouver print design scene.

Sheldon himself is a very talented print designer with a strong technical print background. You can check out his work by visiting the Sensi Media website or [what I recommend..] by looking at his massive canvas prints.

The canvas prints are massive and have some of the most saturated colours that I have seen printed!
